Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater harvesting is the conservation of rainwater by collecting it and storing it before reusing it and discharging it through a foul system. Rainwater harvesting systems are rapidly becoming a popular way to cut back on water consumption with the new water charges being introduced to Ireland.
In order to size rainwater tanks, there are a few things you need to consider.
- The area of your roof. The larger the area of the roof, the more surface water you can potentially gather.
- Rainfall volume. How much rain generally falls in your area? Different parts of the country will have different amounts of rain on average.
- Rainwater usage. Will you be using the rainwater you have collected for toilets, washing machines, gardening, car washing etc?
- Drought periods. How long typically, would your area go in the summer months without any rain? If the area you live in, would typically have 3 to 4 weeks of dry weather, then you might need to consider having that much in reserve in your rain water tank.
